This 5-kilometer-long intermezzo leg takes teams on a trek on an uninhabited island known as Barren Island. Secluded, harsh, and desolate, this island earned its name due to its barren landscape and unforgiving conditions. With its total area measuring just 4.7 km², it offers little relief to those who venture onto its shores. Island holds a dark past as the site of a political prison during the era of communist Yugoslavia. Remains of this history still linger, casting a somber shadow over the landscape. As teams move across the island, they'll encounter remnants of the prison's structures, serving as haunting reminders of the island's troubled past. Despite its bleak reputation, Barren Island has captured the imagination of travelers and is now featured in travel guides as Croatia's own version of Alcatraz.
